X3DPDB

X3D Viewer Requires BS Contact VRML/X3D 6.2 Download or Octaga Player 2.0 Download for windows

For Mac or Linux try FreeWRLDownload

One of the themes for my research should focus on the use of XML to organize and work with data. If the data does not exist in XML I convert it to simplify development. The ability to use XPATH as a query API against XML data is very powerful.

I did a presentation on using XML PDB data and XML X3D to build ribbon models PDF. The key element is that once I figured out the hermite function for doing the nice splines along data points it took about a 1,000 lines of additional java code to build a X3D ribbon model. The XML PDB data is loaded into a DOM object and then using XPATH the data elements of interest are retrieved. A few helper functions for generating XML X3D objects and it came together nicely. The presentation is missing the narrative but thought I would make it available anyway.

X3D Ribbon Models

Requires BS Contact VRML/X3D 6.2 Download or Octaga Player 2.0 Download for Windows For Mac or Linux try FreeWRLDownload Even though X3D is an ISO standard that doesn't mean that all the features are supported yet. Blaxxun has by far the best support in terms of features and performance but is limited to Windows. Another vendor who has X3D support for multiple platforms but doesn't support all the features I am using is Octaga I am going to wait for the next release of Octaga to see if a couple of the bugs have been fixed. If not I will remove a couple of the features I am using from my models to allow cross platform support via Octaga. Other options exist but they appear to need a great deal of work before they can compete with BS Contact or Octage
